Just Homes is an innovative housing charity in the borough of Newham, London. Across a number of properties we accommodate around 76 single homeless men and 9 women with their children (with no recourse to public funds). We support, develop skills and embed the essential routines needed to help them build a new future. Our multi-disciplinary team of around 20 includes people who are bright and smart and committed to using their skills, talents and education to empower the lives of others and help them bring their dreams to reality.
Our history
Just Homes began in 2000 as a housing project for single homeless men under the wider charity First Fruits. Founders Peter and Hannah Watherson aimed to address the deeply rooted issues around homelessness and lack of employable skills they developed a network of social enterprises including garment manufacturing, recycling projects and catalogue distribution network. Just Homes was established as a charity in its own right in 2008.
Just Homes Today
We continue to be committed to monitoring and understanding the ever-changing needs of homeless people in the borough and the evolving socio-economic environment of the nation. We are always exploring innovative ways to tackle the issues that hold back individuals from achieving their full potential. We are not here just to provide shelter, we are here to equip homeless people to build a new future so they can live life to the full and benefit our wider society.
Our Values
Our history
Jonathan Ruffer, our founding trustee, played a pivotal role in establishing First Fruit Charity, the parent organization of Just Homes. The charity was made possible thanks to the seed funding provided by Jonathan and his wife, Jane.
Since its inception, Jonathan has continued to support the charity through his philanthropic foundation, the Lempriere Pringle 2015 Trust, which funds the ongoing Support costs of the charity. Although Jonathan stepped down from our board in 2010, both he and Jane remain integral to the foundation on which the charity is built.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the trustees of the Lempriere Pringle 2015 Trust for their on-going support. The trust's mission focuses on revitalizing the economy of Bishop Auckland, Jonathan Ruffer's hometown, and making a lasting impact on the local community.
